May Hexie Beginnings

Hello! I am Audrey at Glory Be Quilter. I just recently joined Hexagon Alley after finding a new found love in EPP hexies! This is how it all began...
I received a giveaway win at TGIFF from A Quilting Reader's Garden by AngieN with hexies cut out of stiffer paper and a fat quarter of fabric. I had a recent head cold that made me tired where it made me feel like just sitting around.  Watching TV was not enough so I decided to try EPP with hexies.  I asked Angie for a bit of help and she directed my to a tutorial on line on You Tube. So this is what I have done since...

This one has the 3 Hexie flowers on a 12 1/2" square of Pale Flesh Kona fabric.

This block I added leaves to the 3 hexies onto a white Kona fabric.

This is the newest addition I am working on.

So that is 7 Hexie flowers for May, which I think took me 6 hours. I love the portability of EPP with hexies! It adds another dimension to my piecing, just like Hawaiian quilting did for me too. I look forward to working on more in June!

Hexagon Sewing Kit

Someone suggested that those of us who play with hexagons should post what our hexagon sewing kits are like. I'm sorry to tell you, mine is not that exciting! Some I've seen have hundreds of little petals all basted and ready to become flowers. Not mine.

Here's the outside - a lovely cookie tin:

HexKitTin

And nothing mysterious inside:

HexKitInside

The red ones waiting there are chickens!

If you post about your hex kit, please use the label hex kits in addition to your name. Thanks!

Two Done

47 to go - lol.  Only got in 2.5 hours of hexie time this month.  Hope to do better in June.

Wonderful Wednesday Hexagon

Yes, I know it's Thursday, but my U-verse box went out, so there ya go. Besides, I was on an Atlanta turn-around trip from 7:30am until almost midnight last night. So I have TWO excuses. LOL

Here's this week's hexagon, a day late, but quite wise anyway!

Sideways on hexis?

This is my latest hexi shape I've been stitching.
I can't take credit for the shape, I saw it on Pinterest somewhere and quite fancied the idea of making several to go on my bed cover,
perhaps to run around the sides.
Of course now I have to make the little diamonds to fit in the centres of course or I may just applique them onto edgings.
Since my cover design isn't fixed, I will make a few until design inspiration strikes ~

Oh and if your interested in vintage sail making tools and really, who wouldn't be lol - nip across to my blog and see the natty gadget I was given.
Oh yes and the twee little sewing box too!
Happy Hexing folks : )

What a nice weekend

It was such a lovely weekend. For once, no one had an activity they needed to be at - I even spent an entire day in my pajama's! Heaven! I spent most of the weekend in a rocking chair on my porch working on sewing flowers. I didn't keep track of my numbers, but here are a few pictures of the progress.

Thea wanted to pose with the flowers. I have more somewhere, but the little miss in the picture likes to steal them (her current favorite activity is to use the flowers as her "recipes" when she cooks at her play kitchen).

Closer view

And making headway on the fabric in my travel bag.

Speaking of travel bags. When I started thinking about hexagons, I read everything I could find on the internet (including this entire blog - everyone here is such an inspiration!) and I especially loved looking at everyone's hexie kits. If you have a hexagon kit, would you be willing to share?

Housekeeping: Welcome New Author

Patti is joining us on Hexagon Alley. She'll soon post an introduction, but if you want to see a couple of her projects, you can link to her blog, which is in the sidebar. Welcome, Patti!

And oh, look, Audrey is joining us, too! Her blog is on the sidebar, too. Audrey is new to paper piecing and got into it because of Angie, also a contributor to this blog, and blog linked in the sidebar.

If you have a blog, and I don't have it in the sidebar, please let me know the address and I'll add it.

If you decide you are through with hexagons, or through with posting about them, let me know so I can remove you as an author. That doesn't mean you can't read and comment, only that you can't post. If you aren't going to anyway, no need to stay on the list. There are a limited number of authors allowed.

<---------LOOK! New Poll!

I didn't get to finish my fussy-cut hexagon this week, so no post from me on Wednesday. Sometimes life happens. It's more birds - fun little owls! It'll be here this coming Wednesday!

Obligatory hexagon project picture - not mine! Sadly, the blog no longer exists, but the picture was still available on the internet search I did. Isn't this gorgeous? I'd love to know about the maker.

30s It Is

I've got a ways to go for my 8 hours this month, but will keep trying to get there - up to 3 hours.

The small hexie in the bottom right is the size of my first hexie project.  Spent some time going through my stash finding a piece to use as the background. I like the old wall paper look to this blue print. Think it will go with a lot of colors.  That is a 5 1/2" square.  I'm designing this as I go, but I think I will need 64 of these.  Applique will feature somewhere on this new quilt.

Just a little progress

Last week I was chained to my sewing machine making tutus for my daughter's dance recital. Now that it is done and over (phew!), I can focus on other projects, like my hexies.

It was so nice to sit on the couch, watch Call the Midwife, and do some handwork. I made just a little progress, with 36 more hexagons done, but it is something!

One little stack...

May Hexi BOM Flutterby

Of course I've added a bit extra you may notice!
Those two half hexis at either side, weren't in the original pattern,
but somehow, that blue fabric cried out for a little less hexi shape on the lower wings lol
My blocks are all going onto white on white backing, so that's why flutterby's antennae are on a white hexi.
Anyway that's my May block of the month, and given that I've felt so crap, I'm amazed I managed to complete it at all so it will have to do : )
lol

HeLP for Hexie-aholics

Hello everyone - it's the 17th of the month so I hope all y'all will hop on over to my blog for our monthly hexie linky party. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your wonderful projects!

I've made a little progress on my POTC project - I've finished the first block with partial sashing. I didn't take a photo but I have a red paisley fabric (seen above in the center) that I am fussy cutting to carry through each block. I started with just a FQ and it's now swiss cheese. I can see that this is going to be a long term project but I just adore fussy cutting and looking for coordinating fabrics.

Back to Hexies

It seems like forever, but really only near a month, since I was able to get back to my hexies. I've joined Hexagon Alley hoping it will be a motivator to keep at them. So this month I'm happy to report I've put in an hour so far - punching templates, deciding on a pattern I'm going to aim for - that took the longest - and choosing some fabric.  Then I even had a bit of time to make the first hexies.
My goal in the next hour is to finish this flower - I'm going to keep them simple - and pick a background fabric for them.  BTW:  There is a fabulous hexagon quilt (several actually) in the latest Quiltmania magazine. It's issue #100.  I found mine at Barnes and Noble.

One Wonderful Wednesday Hexagon

Here's this week's fussy cut hexagon. It was from a very busy fabric, and I'm not as enamored of it as most of them, but it is cute, just the same.

This one is cuter than anything - and each week I seem to think the new one is the cutest one, but this one really is, don't you think?

FussyHex9

I was going to make them all face the center, but I messed up the first one, so made a new plan, and I think this has a lot more movement. Sometimes mistakes are good.

My April hexies

This is how long I made it in April. Now I'm ready for a new round on each of these projects.

I joined, as usual, six new blocks to this zig zag quilt.

La Passion is growing, but just 100 every month. I think I have to speed up soon, else it will take 8 years to finish, at least.

The butterfly quilt is also growing with 6 blocks. Funny it's the same pattern as the zig zag quilt. Use of colours can give a totally different result, as you may see.

I've prepared some new hexies for a pouch like I made last month.

And at last I've done two more stars. Now I have four of them.

You can read more about all of these things on my blog here:

Phew!

Susan was so great to let me jump back in after I have slacked in the posting department. Thank you!

My hexagons fell to the wayside for other projects, I ran out of papers and just didn't get around to making more. If you have ever read the book, "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie", the series of events needed to make more papers seemed to follow the same story line. Only with less cookies.

So, finally, I put other projects aside to get more papers made. I use my Silhouette Cameo to cut the papers. I love this machine!

It is a little difficult to see, but here is a close up of the card stock after it has been cut...

Peeling the hexagons off the cutting mat...

A stack ready to go...

And just in time for my busy weekend shuttling kids around to their various activities, my hexagon-to-go bag is ready!
