I'm simply curious.
1. Is there anyone sewing hexagons but NOT paper piecing?
2. If you paper piece, do you a) roughly trim fabric in a hexagon shape 1/4" bigger than papers, or b) use cut squares and don't trim?
3. Does anyone use Inklingo to print on fabric and then join shapes with running stitches?
I have always paper pieced, and I trim by eye to the shape of a hexagon, but I see there are other ways to do it.
That would be a #2 for me LOL. I trim it first to a square, then pin it to my hexie, then trim it to a hexagon and stitch it around. Lots of them!! And then stitch them together and pull the template out.
ReplyDeleteI baste squares to my hexagon shapes. Apparently this was how it was originally done in the old quilts.
ReplyDeleteI take out my papers once all 6 sides are stitched to other hexagons.
I use paper piecing. I find it easiest to cut squares that are the general size of my hexagons. And I don't sew the fabric TO the (cardstock) papers, I tack each corner of the fabric to itself, which makes removing the papers easier. I've been posting about my latest hexagon project on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI use plastics cut out of milk gallons with a hole punched in them. I pin them on the fabric, roughly cut around them, baste, trim to about a quarter inch with small scissors then sew them together. When all 6 sides are surrounded by others then I take the plastic out.
